Induction

Induction is the physical phenomenon in which a changing magnetic field generates an electrical voltage in a conductor.
Definition

Explanation

What is induction?

A current-carrying conductor produces a magnetic field. When the current changes, the magnetic field changes as well. If an electrically conductive material is placed inside this changing field, an electrical voltage is induced in the material.
When the electrical circuit is closed, a current can flow. According to Lenz’s law, the induced current creates a magnetic field that opposes the original change.
Induction-heating principle: an alternating magnetic field induces current in the workpiece.

Self-inductance

Induction can also occur in the current-carrying conductor itself. A changing current produces a changing magnetic field, which induces a voltage in the same conductor that opposes the current change. This is called self-inductance.
A coil strengthens this effect because the same current passes through several turns. Self-inductance is represented by L and measured in henries.

Formula: U is the induced voltage, L is the self-inductance and dI/dt is the rate of change of current.

Induction applied to induction heating

In induction heating, alternating current flows through a copper coil. This produces an alternating magnetic field. Eddy currents are induced in a metal workpiece placed inside the field.
The electrical resistance of the material converts the energy of these currents into heat. Coil geometry and workpiece position largely determine where the heat is generated.

Summary

Induction is the basis of transformers, generators and induction heating. A changing magnetic field induces a voltage; in a closed conductive circuit this can create current and heat.
